How does it work? Depending on which plan you decide to select for your federal direct loan, there are certain rules to abide by. Usually and most commonly, the loans term would consist of 20-25 years, depending on when the loans were originally borrowed. If you choose the Income Contingent, Income Based, or the Pay As You Earn repayment plans, then your loan balance would be forgiven at the end of the term if you still have a remaining balance.
